The way a prison should be....
not the vacation/recruitment paradise of UK prisons.
The UK has a lot lower crime rate than many other countries with
supposedly "tough" jails. In fact, the only countries where it is
lower have even better human rights observance.
How a society rehabilitates offenders is perhaps the truest measure
of civilisation. I think Churchill said something along these lines.
Prison should be spartan and disciplined, yes, but abusive or
dangerous, no. That's because it is essentially a hospital for those
suffering from an ethical deficiency or antisocial personality.
Effective punishment is about correcting these traits, not further
brutalising or institutionalising those in it's care.
Politically correct? No, factually correct.
