Sad, but true.

Post a hard Brexit Brits will be so impoverished they won't be able to afford new quality Audi, BMW, Merc' etc. and will have to make do with cheap third world imports or second hand...

Already answered that one long ago.

If we fall out of the customs union then 10% or more tariffs will apply to UK cars, like Jag's, sold in the EU. Notwithstanding the fall in the pound, which will ameliorate the pain (but not entirely when you have to buy in gearboxes from ZF etc.) this will make UK cars more expensive in the EU and put them at a competitive disadvantage. Most of the EU cars that would have come here will substitute for UK sales in the EU. Doubtless some Brit's will still pay more for reliable German cars with working tech'.

Yes and no. We won't "fall out" of it. We will leave it - probably by
some migration process - and may well adopt a bilateral replacement.

The pound's fall has helped but it will likely rise some more as
certainty returns so the best time to take advantage of its lower value
is now.

and I rebuffed you (at least twice) before. The number of luxury cars that
the UK sells to the EU is the tiny fraction of the number they sell to us

Even if they replaced every UK foreign sale they would still be down 90%

In this context I meant all of them, including all the 'cooking' mass produced cars. The simplest way round the tariffs for producers is just to move production to from the UK to EU, except for domestic sale.

the problem with this is that the volume manufactures no longer make every
car in their range in the same factory

each factory only makes one car type

It took them 20 years to get to this state

It will likely take them 20 years to go back

Not gonna happen - cheaper to suffer the tariff hit until the countries see
sense and agree a deal.

The above is based on the idea that the UK will inpose tariffs (import
duty) on German cars - and by extension, on all dutiable imports from
the whole EU.

But it is extremely unlikely that the UK would do that as a matter of
principle. The only circumstance in which it is likely is one where the
EU imposes tariffs on imports from the UK and reciprocal action has to
be taken.

We won't be able to afford German cars as easily as we have done in
the past. Same goes for various French luxury goods too.

In direct contrast to what Nigel Farage predicted, the German
government is not allowing their car industry workers to get any
special treatment. If market forces dictate that there is less
demand from one country then they are expected to work on
exporting to another.

The loss will be ours.

The prospect of fewer filthy diesel polluters on the roads only fills me
with happiness. Around half of all German vehicles sold are diesel and
thanks to the EU deliberately compromising the emissions standards to
not take into account particulate pollutants in order to help the German
car industry, we're forced to breathe group 1 carcinogens.

Well, the main reason for all those diesels is the dishonest way the
emissions readings were falsified by the likes of VW. And Honda, Mazda,
Mitsubishi etc. Not just the Germans, not just EU members.
