Accounts filed by Amazon UK Services reveal it paid £7.4 million of

Well yeah on a level playing field I would agree. The bottom line is
there isn't a level playing field and our politicians should have fixed
this issue ages ago. Amazon use our infrastructure and they should pay
for it like our domestic businesses do. Perhaps they should even pay
more for the privilege of operating on our hallowed turf. We are after
all doing them the favour.

On sales of £1.4Bn, nearly all VATable, Amazon will have collected £280M [from customers] for HMRC.

Delivery vehicles etc. have to pay road tax, fuel duty etc., which is greater than the cost of roads' maintenance.

They have to do PAYE (IT and NI) for anyone employed here.

Amazon do of course engage accountants who no doubt advise them on how to minimise their corporation tax bill (other than by simply losing money), unlike dummies like Hazel Blears, who did not even know that she could roll over CGT on business assets and appeared in the media 'mea culpa' with a cheque to HMRC for £13k, although I bet it was never cashed.

This is the important line of the article: “It is a scandal they are
deliberately manipulating the way they do their business for no other
purpose than to avoid tax.”

Of course they are. I would and you would too if in a position to save
taxes. The UK evidently has crazy tax laws like we do. Blame the
people that write the laws, not the people following them.

The tax laws should be simplified, but that would take work away from
accountants and lawyers. You make this much, you pay that much. Get
rid of the the in-betweens.

Have you any evidence to support your startling thesis that Amazon's
vehicles haven't got Road Tax licences? Or that they are not insured and
therefore have not had insurance premium tax paid on the policy
purchases? Or even that they don't use taxed and dutiable fuel?

And where they use a toilled river crossing, are you sure they don't pay
the toll?

Great, can I use my tax to plough into buying assets that benefit me?

Er, no. I have to support gov.uk, the nhs, the military, the police etc.

Can we let North Korea bomb the fuck out of Amazon UK or the local mafia
shoot the shit out of their warehouses if they don't pay for
'protection'. I mean if they ain't gonna pay why should be protect them?

See how that works. It doesn't. They should pay.

The rhetoric is annoying granted but some assets need to be shared.

ineffective.

Indeed you can - see an accountant. Last budge the Chancellor limited 40% tax relief on interest on buy to let property, but otherwise business investment and written off losses on failed ventures are allowable against tax - even PAYE.

Most people use limited companies to well limit their exposure to potential losses - sorry if this is too technical for you...

So now Amazon don't pay rates on their warehouses with its precept for the police? Just on my flat it was £157 last year.

Do Amazon pay National Insurance Employers Contributions for their staff? (pays for the NHS if they get sick).

Do try and use your brain before typing...

Indeed you can - see an accountant. Last budge the Chancellor limited 40%

Can we let North Korea bomb the fuck out of Amazon UK or the local mafia
shoot the shit out of their warehouses if they don't pay for

See how that works. It doesn't. They should pay.
So now Amazon don't pay rates on their warehouses with its precept for the

Do Amazon pay National Insurance Employers Contributions for their staff?

Very few people who haven't had a hand in running a business have any
idea of UK business taxes. I'm only familiar with the ones which (may)
affect me, and many people don't even understand their own payroll
taxes, let alone VAT.

Did I say that. No. Do you really think that is all there is too it. The

structures that Amazon use.
Trivially.

1) Don't make any net profit. See your accountant if you don't know
what net profit means, or how to eliminate it.

2) Don't pay any Corporation Tax, because you have no net profit.

You still get to pay any other business taxes you are liable for, just
like Amazon. But as always, we are only talking about Corporation Tax,
which is the only tax on businesses that any journalist has ever heard
of.

The UK government does not provide cars for its citizens unless disabled.

Most of Amazon's road use tax will come directly or indirectly from the use of goods vehicles.

No you don't, but if you so suffer some, you would at least expect to be able to set them off against profits in future years. Indeed start ups would barely work without them - consider Tesla - billions spend on technical development, building a factory and marketing before they sell their first car - i.e. huge losses in their first few years, to be set off against profits in future years, once production and sales have ramped up. This is taking a long view...

Road Tax is a minor part of the taxation collected from road users. They
collar me for £20 a year in Road Tax. It costs well more than twice that
in taxation to fill up the tank just once.

And the annual insurance premium tax is more than the £20 Road Tax (it
amounts to 12/112 of about £250 a year, which is around £27).

These are the figures for a relatively lightly taxed car and a driver
whose insurance is seen as a light risk for the insurer. For a lorry -
or even a delivery van - the figures are a lot higher.

And of course, where Amazon use the postal service they have to pay for

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/4209893/amazon-tax-britain-uk-boycott/
Accounts filed by Amazon UK Services reveal it paid £7.4 million of
corporation tax in 2016 - less than HALF the amount paid in 2015.
So what?

Awwww the po babies. You can not fault anyone
for using the tax laws as written to their own advantage.
Anyone who does not is a fucking fool.
Well yeah on a level playing field I would agree. The bottom line is
there isn't a level playing field and our politicians should have fixed
this issue ages ago. Amazon use our infrastructure and they should pay
for it like our domestic businesses do.
Have you any evidence to support your startling thesis that Amazon's
vehicles haven't got Road Tax licences?
Did I say that. No.
Er, yes. You did.
You said: "Amazon use our infrastructure and they should pay for it".
But they already do, just as much as any other business does. There is
no way in which they or any other UK-based retailer / delivery service
could avoid doing so.
Do they pay for the Police, the courts, central government, planning,
subsidies for public transport to get their people to work, the army,
the navy, the airforce, the hospitals, social care and so on, and so on,

Thanks for the additions. I had already realised that I had forgotten

which all comes out in the wash of the profit and loss account).

Sorry you did. VAT on energy is just general VAT at a different rate and reclaimed in the normal way. IPT OTOH is not reclaimable :-(

Do you really think that is all there is too it. The
roads. Larf, and btw road tax doesn't pay for the roads and hasn't done
so since 1937 although the wind of change is coming.
And of course, where Amazon use the postal service they have to pay for
that too.

Or that they are not insured and

And where they use a toilled river crossing, are you sure they don't pay

Perhaps they should even pay
more for the privilege of operating on our hallowed turf. We are after
all doing them the favour.
Not so. Amazon is a wonderful retailer. The customer is always right.
You don't get it do you.
If that was a question, the answer is that I don't "get" you assertion
that a company which plainly contributes a lot into infrastructure
taxation pays no infrastructure taxation.
Yet to have to have meant exactly that because oterwise, your remark
"Amazon use our infrastructure and they should pay for it" would make
absolutely no sense.
But there is another explanation for that, I suppose.

We currently have a c. 2.5% import duty deal with the USA. At the price

this issue ages ago. Amazon use our infrastructure and they should pay
for it like our domestic businesses do.
Have you any evidence to support your startling thesis that Amazon's
vehicles haven't got Road Tax licences?
Did I say that. No. Do you really think that is all there is too it. The
roads. Larf, and btw road tax doesn't pay for the roads and hasn't done
so since 1937 although the wind of change is coming.
Who does pay? That argument has gone on for ages. Should all road
costs be born by the vehicles that use it? You can make an agrument for
that.

If you do not own a vehicles should you contribute to road
infrastructure? You do benefit from efficient delivery of food to your
local grocer store so yes, perhaps you should.

Both sides have good points.

Perhaps they should even pay
more for the privilege of operating on our hallowed turf. We are after
all doing them the favour.
Not so. Amazon is a wonderful retailer. The customer is always right.
Evidently Amazon offers a service that many people want. So who should
pay for the privilege? As long as they give me a good value, good
service, I don't care how much profit they make as long as they operate
within the laws. That means the pay taxes according to the tax code.
Not enough? Change the tax laws, don't blame people for taking every
advantage. I sure do and expect most everyone does.

Not equally to the police (thank God) but equally in financing it.

Nope, I blame gov for talking the talk and not walking the walk. The UK
gov should protect UK businesses but they don't. In fact if you had read
any of my wonderful oeuvre of enlightening posts you would see I have
posted about how UK and EU businesses are shackled and penalised by
regulations and taxation that the real invaders only pay lip service to.
Grow up sonny. Smell the coffee. It's not a level playing field. UK

Your answer "no" is incorrect. Amazon pays a lot of money into the
Exchequer.
But you prefer to pretend that they don't.
Nope, I don't pretend anything. It's not enough. You got shares in the

You lie!
Nope, I blame gov for talking the talk and not walking the walk. The UK
gov should protect UK businesses but they don't.
The government is not allowed to do that by the EU.

Didn't you know that?

This is why I am soooooo against any trade
deal with the US. Don't give the Yanks an edge, they will cheat and we
will lose.
Odd that it's only ever US companies that are criticised.

Foreign companies selling goods in the UK through distributors e.g. BMW
or Sony, give their distributors very little discount from list price,
and the latter generally make just enough gross profit to pay their
costs i.e. they pay no Corporation Tax, either. The manufacturer abroad
makes almost all the profit, which never comes anywhere near the UK.

Where is the outcry? Not that it would matter much, UK companies do the
same when exporting. Why would they not? Operating in another country
is always difficult and generally expensive. If there were no extra
profits to be made, why would anyone do it?

Also odd that it's only ever Corporation Tax which is mentioned, one of
a wide range of taxes paid by businesses. A few years ago, I had reason
to look at the summary of accounts for J D Wetherspoon, a thoroughly
British company. What struck me most was that for every pound of profit
received by the owners of Wetherspoon, the shareholders, the
government took *twelve* pounds in various taxes, of which about thirty
pence would have been Corporation Tax. That's what the usual suspects
refer to as 'paying their fair share' of taxes. That isn't what I call
it.

Awwww the po babies. You can not fault anyone
for using the tax laws as written to their own advantage.

Angry MPs urge Brits to boycott Amazon
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/4209893/amazon-tax-britain-uk-boycott/
Accounts filed by Amazon UK Services reveal it paid £7.4 million of
corporation tax in 2016 - less than HALF the amount paid in 2015.
I wouldn't mind betting that the average MP could teach them a thing or
two in this respect :-)

Indeed so, I'd expect them to know the difference between net profit and
turnover.

Funny, business owners gets criticised when take all the operating
profits for themselves, and they get criticised when they invest it all
in the business... what's a bloated plutocrat to do?

Use Amazon and boycott tax!
A classic example before the EU changed the rules was buying software.

If you are VATable business, you don't care, but a small trader or consumer does.

Norton arranged that their sales were made in Luxembourg, where VAT was only 12%, so when you logged into renew, you were magically conveyed there and made the purchase on servers in Luxembourg.

Governments in states with high VAT (e.g. UK, France) did not like this, but in reality it was no different to going there and buying it in a shop.
