Discussion:
Received a text without a number?

I often get spam texts from a company name (faked) with no number. How do I find the number so I can report these cunts to somebody? Using an early Samsung Tocca (sort of smart)phone.

For example:

"You have a pending Tax Refund of 265.84GBP from HMRC. To proceed your application please complete your form via hmrc.login1-uk.com"

The From field is not a phone number as it usually would be if not in my contacts list, but instead says "HMRCUK".

If I press reply, nothing goes into the To field. I haven't actually tried sending anything back.

You can't, and you can't send messages to it even if your phone allowed
you to.

Surely there has to be a from number for a text to work? Why does the mobile phone system allow anonymous texts?

I get other texts from things like my GP and dentist, and the Royal Mail, which manage to insert their name instead of the number. I just tried replying to a Royal Mail text, and nothing is inserted into the TO field, and the send button is greyed out.

Text messages are sent from the originator to an SMSC (effectively the
post office) and then from the post office to the destination. The to
and from numbers are therefore effectively the mobile and the post
office, not the two mobiles.

This is a gross simplification as in fact when sending the message to
the mobile, the actual mobile number isn't even used for example.

The owner of the SMSC (probably under message details) will be able to
know who sent the message, but if that turns out to be an SMSC provider
in somewhere-not-the-uk then I'd reckon you're out of luck.

Think of it just like someone sending you a letter and not putting a
return address on it...

So how will forwarding the spam to 7726 help (as suggested by Optimist in this thread)? Are you saying the spam may be untraceable?

in this thread)?  Are you saying the spam may be untraceable?
Effectively yes - when you forward it, it will come from you, via your
networks SMSC, none of the headers will have been preserved etc.

Of course, as you said it contains a valid web address so they can work
out from that who is spamming people, and of course there's no point in
sending spam (in the classic sense of UCE) unless you are pointing
people at a commercial service.

Oh well, I'll just hope the web address yields some information. Unlike emails which I can just delete, text messages cause my phone to make a noise (incase it's a friend contacting me), so I'm interrupted.

No, I just don't know the technical aspects of phone numbers. To me, I see nothing wrong with 0003002003600. There's always a couple of digits on the front to do with country codes.

off, contact the ASA and/or HMRC who may well be able to assist you.
There is a slight irony here, as each time you access the self
assessment website, HMRC telephones or texts you with a 5 digit code
as a security measure. The call appears to come from 0003002003600
If you remove the initial 00 you are left with a genuine HMRC enquiry
number.
They've encoded the ToA as 0x91 rather than 0x81 when they sent the
message over SMPP...
Thanks, but in my case it wasn't an SMS they sent it as a voice call
to one of my geographic numbers.

There you go JWS, you can pay my tax for me.

If you're that concerned that this could be seen as spoofing or passing
off, contact the ASA and/or HMRC who may well be able to assist you.

Why did you give them a landline number instead of a mobile number?

I often get spam texts from a company name (faked) with no number.
How do I find the number so I can report these cunts to somebody?
Using an early Samsung Tocca (sort of smart)phone.
"You have a pending Tax Refund of 265.84GBP from HMRC.  To proceed
your application please complete your form via hmrc.login1-uk.com"
The From field is not a phone number as it usually would be if not in
my contacts list, but instead says "HMRCUK".
If I press reply, nothing goes into the To field.  I haven't actually
tried sending anything back.
You can't, and you can't send messages to it even if your phone allowed
you to.
(as an aside, such a thing used to completely lock up certainly old Nokia's)
I had exactly the same message the other day. Keep meaning to report it
to HMRC but keep forgetting, will see what they say tomorrow.
